What is the HDRC Evidence Pie?

A simple way to understand and use different types of evidence for better decisions.

Why is the Evidence Pie important?

When councils and public services make decisions, they affect people’s health and wellbeing. Good decisions need good evidence—but “evidence” means different things to different people. The Evidence Pie makes it clear and fair by showing all the types of evidence that matter.

What’s in the Pie?

  1. Lived Experience
Real stories and experiences from people in the community.

  1. Professional Knowledge
What professionals know from their day-to-day work.

  1. Academic Research
Studies and findings from universities and researchers.

  1. Population Data
Facts and figures about people - like age, gender, and trends.

  1. Organisational Data
Information about services and how they perform.

  1. Impact Measurement
Evidence showing what works and what difference it makes.

How does the Evidence Pie help?

  • Helps identify gaps in evidence.

  • Builds confidence for staff and elected members.

  • Makes decisions more transparent and fair.

Why is this good for everyone?

  • For Residents: Your voice matters in decisions.

  • For Services: Helps improve planning and delivery.

  • For Councils: Creates stronger, evidence-based policies.
