February 2026

Our ‘Magu’ report is now published!

We are delighted to share the first report from our ‘Preventative Spend’ project.

The report focuses on one of the Council’s ‘Preventative Spend’ areas - preventing parent-baby separation - exploring how preventative spending can make a difference to families, and identify what evidence is needed to show long-term value.

Approximately £1.17 million is spent annually on preventing parent-baby separation in RCT, with around 55% of this directed towards tertiary prevention: intervening to stop a problem getting worse or reoccurring.

Our research centred on the Magu Service - an integrated pathway for pregnant women and their families, designed to reduce the number of children entering care.

Early findings shows that Magu helps prevent parent - baby separation, improves family wellbeing, and has the potential to significantly reduce long term costs for the Council.
