Academic / Academia - The environment or community concerned with the pursuit of research, education, and scholarship. It typically includes universities, colleges, research institutions, and the people who work or study within them
Academic Research - Research conducted by scholars or researchers in academic institutions.
Clinic -The HDRC Team Clinic is a meeting between the HDRC project enquirer, the HDRC Team and any other relevant experts to to discuss their enquiry in more detail before a proposal is developed.
Clinic Proforma -A document template that is completed at the HDRC Team Clinic to ensure all the information is captured
Collaboration - Working together
Collaborating Partners - people who work together to improve the way in which we all gather and use evidence to inform local decision making and the design of services. Find out who our collaborating partners are here.
Community - People who live, work, play or study or share the same space or interests in Rhondda Cynon Taf
Community Organisations - Local groups made up of people who work together to help others in their area. They might run activities, offer support, or provide services to make life better for people in the community, for example local community groups, charities or organisations.
Community Voice - What local people have to say about their lives, needs, and ideas.
Community Voice Team (CVT) - A team made up of people who live, work, study or play in Rhondda Cynon Taf that ensure that lived experience and the community voice is included throughout all the work of the HDRC.
Enquirer -The person who submits an enquiry to RCT HDRC.
Enquiry - This is how a RCT HDRC project starts out. They progress to proposals and, when accepted, they become projects.
Enquiry Window - A set period of time when RCT HDRC can accept project enquiries.
Evidence - best available, well-researched information to guide decisions. These evidence types are documented in the evidence pie.
Evidence-Based Decision Making - Making decisions based on the best available evidence from research, data, and expert knowledge.
Evidence Gaps - Areas where there is a lack of sufficient evidence to inform decision making.
Evidence Pie - A diagram developed by RCT HDRC to explain all the different types of evidence that is needed to enable evidence-based decisions.
Evidence Synthesis - The process of combining evidence from multiple sources to draw conclusions.
Governance - How decisions are made and who makes them
Health Determinants - The environment we live in, the economy and our social relationships. Also referred to as 'wider determinants of health'.
Health Inequalities - How health determinants differ for different groups of people, which means not everyone has the same chance to live a good, balanced life - physically, mentally and socially.
HDRC - Health Determinants Research Collaboration.
Impact Measurement - the process of assessing the changes—positive or negative, intended or unintended—that result from a specific intervention, program, policy, or activity.
Impact Measurement Data - Data used to assess the effects or outcomes of a program or intervention.
Knowledge Mobilisation - The process of transferring knowledge from research into practice to improve outcomes. You can learn more about knowledge mobilisation here (external link).
Life Chances -The opportunities each individual has to improve their quality of life.
Lived Experience -Real-life experience. This could be personal stories or knowledge of experiences and feelings of what it's like for someone in real-life.
Lived Experience Advisors - People who share their personal opinions and experiences, offering unique lived experience knowledge and expertise that helps direct the work of the HDRC.
NIHR - National Institute for Health Care Research (external link).
Operational Delivery Group (ODG) - The group responsible for the operational delivery of the RCT HDRC.
Organisation - A group set up to do something specific. In terms of RCT HDRC - our organisation is Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.
Organisational data - Data collected within an organisation related to its operations and performance.
Opportunities -Opportunities for Lived Experience Advisors and Community Organisations to work with the RCT HDRC on a project. These are usually paid opportunities.
Partner Community Organisations - Local community groups, charities or organisations who offer specialist knowledge and expertise to the work of the HDRC as described here.
Population -Everyone in a town, city or country etc. RCT HDRC would primarily look at the population in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
Population data - Data related to the characteristics of a population, such as demographics, health status, and socio-economic factors.
Priorities - What matters most to somebody. In terms of RCT HDRC, our priorities will inform us what projects to work on, and in what order.
Professional Knowledge - Expertise and skills acquired through professional practice and experience.
Projects - In terms of RCT HDRC, projects are when we work with others on specific pieces of work. They start as enquiries, then become proposals, and finally projects where the work begins.
Project Sponsor - whoever is going to be responsible for owning the HDRC project.
Proposals - When RCT HDRC receive an enquiry that meets their basic requirements, it progresses as a 'proposal' prior to becoming a project.
Proposal Agreement - A contract used to shape the implementation of a HDRC project and also to monitor progress against timescales to ensure the project is completed on time.
Proposal Scoping Note -A document used to scope the requirements of a proposal.
Research - a systematic process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue. It follows a structured method to answer specific questions or test hypotheses, often aiming to discover new knowledge, validate existing theories, or solve problems.
Research Active - An organisation or individual actively engaged in research activities.
Research Capacity - The ability of an organisation or individual to conduct research effectively.
Research Community - A group of people—like scientists, experts, and university staff—who work together to study things, find out new information, and share what they learn. Find out more about RCT HDRC's research community.
Research Data - Data compiled during the course of the project.
Research Incubation – The process of supporting the development of a new research idea or proposal.

Strategic Oversight Board - The board responsible for overseeing the project and making decisions about budget allocations.
Stakeholders - People or groups who have an interest in a project or are affected by it. They can be involved in planning, decision-making, or simply impacted by the results.
Work Package / Programme - The programme of work to be undertaken by the HDRC funded by the NIHR.
