Introduction to inclusive swimming for neurodiverse children

Families enrol children into swimming lessons for a few reasons including water safety, water confidence and essential life skills; however, the learning experiences of neurodivergent children can vary significantly.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leisure services team is dedicated to providing inclusive and supportive swimming experiences for neurodivergent children, creating safe spaces where every child feels valued and confident in achieving their own goals.

The team want to explore the following:

  • The demand for neurodiverse swimming lessons
  • Families already engaging with neurodiverse swimming lessons in the leisure centres, to understand their experiences and learn how things can be improved
  • Those not engaging in neurodiverse swimming lessons to understand the barriers and challenges
  • Neurodivergent training that is available for staff

What we will do

We will use a wide range of evidence to understand and raise awareness of more inclusive swimming lessons for neurodivergent children.

This will include organisational data, population information, impact data, academic research, professional knowledge, and lived experience from local people.

Bringing these sources together will help us build a full picture of current needs and opportunities.

How you can get involved

Your views are important to us. By taking part in our surveys and sharing your experiences, you’ll be directly contributing to the lived experience evidence we use to understand how inclusive swimming is for neurodivergent children in RCT.

Your feedback helps us see what works well, what doesn’t, and what barriers people face when engaging with swimming services.

Whether your child swims regularly elsewhere or does not swim at all, we want to understand your experience to improve local options. This survey is anonymous and takes about 5 minutes.

N.B. Your child does not need to have a diagnosis.
